There’s something extra special about photographing families I’ve worked with before. Seeing how much the kids have grown, how their personalities are blooming, and how their connection deepens over time. This beautiful family of four met me at the International Rose Test Garden in Portland for an early fall morning session, and it was the perfect mix of play, laughter, and sunshine.
We started our session with a quiet stroll through the rows of roses, their colors still vibrant even in early autumn. The girls couldn’t resist stopping to smell a few blooms (and let’s be honest, neither could we!). We paused to listen to a musician playing nearby — one of those perfectly Portland moments that you just can’t plan.

Morning Time at the International Rose Test Garden
Because we met in the morning, the light was soft and beautiful, and the garden was still calm before the crowds arrived. Morning sessions work so well for families with little ones. Everyone’s fresh, happy, and ready to play. And play we did! The girls ran, twirled, and explored together, while mom and dad soaked in those fleeting moments that seem to pass too quickly.
Sessions like this are why I love photographing families outside , the mix of natural beauty, candid connection, and the stories that unfold so effortlessly. The Rose Garden is one of my favorite locations because it offers both stunning backdrops and space for kids to be themselves.

Tips for Morning Family Sessions with Kids
If you’re planning your own family photos and wondering whether a morning session might be right for you, here are a few reasons I often recommend them , especially for families with young children:
1. Happier kids (and parents!)
Little ones tend to be at their best earlier in the day, before naps or mealtimes get tricky. Morning sessions often mean more giggles, genuine smiles, and fewer meltdowns.
2. Softer, flattering light
The gentle morning light creates beautiful, even tones and a soft glow. Perfect for those natural, heartfelt images you’ll treasure.
3. Fewer crowds
Popular Portland spots like the International Rose Test Garden can get busy later in the day. Shooting early gives us space to explore, play, and capture those quiet in-between moments.
4. A relaxed start to your day
There’s something lovely about spending your morning together outdoors, connecting as a family before the day gets busy. Many families make a little adventure out of it with brunch afterward!
If you’ve been dreaming about updating your family photos this year, let’s plan something relaxed and joyful that feels true to your family. Whether it’s the Rose Garden, Forest Park, or the Oregon Coast, I’ll help you find the perfect setting and make the experience easy from start to finish.
